# Adding and removing entries

## When you'd do this

The Data Entry plan lists every entry Filed will send to tax software: one row per W-2, 1099, K-1, rental property and so on. Most of the time the plan is built from your documents. Two situations call for changing it by hand:

* **Something is missing.** A second W-2 arrived by phone, or you want an entry the documents don't support. Add it yourself.
* **Something shouldn't be there.** The tax software holds a duplicate or an entry that doesn't belong on this return. Remove it from Filed instead of opening the tax software.

Adding and removing entries is available for **Drake**. Other tax software may offer only part of this; if a menu option described here isn't shown, it isn't supported for that connection yet.

## Adding an entry

**Walkthrough: add another entry to a form**

1. In the plan, switch the view to **All fields** so every form is listed, not just the ones with changes.
2. Find the form you want another entry on, for example **W-2**, and open its options menu (the three dots on the form's row).
3. Choose **Add new entry**. A blank entry appears under the form, marked **New**.
4. Type the values into the entry's fields. Each one saves when you press Enter or move to another field.
5. Click the send button at the bottom of the plan, for example **Send 1 form to Drake Tax**. The confirmation lists the entry as **New**.

After the send, Filed reads the return back. The entry stops showing as New and is treated like any other entry in the tax software.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Add new entry** appears on forms that already have at least one entry and that can hold more than one. A blank entry is never sent: nothing goes to the tax software until it has at least one value.
{% endhint %}

## Removing an entry

What "remove" does depends on whether the entry exists in the tax software yet.

| The entry is... | Menu option | What happens |
| -------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **New** - only in the plan, not yet sent | **Remove from plan** | It is dropped from the plan. Nothing changes in the tax software. |
| Already in the tax software, no unsent edits | **Mark for deletion** | It is flagged for removal and deleted from the tax software on the next send. |
| Already in the tax software, with edits | **Restore from tax software** | Your unsent edits are discarded. Do this first, then **Mark for deletion** becomes available. |

**Walkthrough: delete an entry from the tax software**

1. In the plan, open the entry you want to remove.
2. Open the options menu at the top of the entry (the three dots beside its name) and choose **Mark for deletion**.
3. Confirm. The entry stays visible, shown as marked for deletion, until you send.
4. Click the send button at the bottom of the plan. The confirmation states how many forms will be deleted.

Once the send finishes, the entry is gone from the tax software and from the plan. Anything attached to it goes with it: in Drake, that includes the entry's additional tabs and its detail worksheets.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Deleting is permanent in the tax software. Filed keeps a backup from before each send, so a mistaken delete can be undone by restoring it. See [Reverting with backups](/reference/products/ai-tax-prep/reverting-with-backups.md#in-ai-data-entry).
{% endhint %}

### Changing your mind before sending

An entry marked for deletion is only removed when you send. To keep it, open its options menu and choose **Restore from tax software**.

## What isn't supported

* **Depreciation.** Asset entries can't be added or removed from Filed; make those changes in the tax software.
* **An entry that changed in the tax software since Filed last read it.** The send is stopped so your newer work isn't overwritten. Refresh the return, review, and send again.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.filed.com/reference/products/ai-tax-prep/adding-and-removing-entries.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
