# Double

Connect Double so Filed can work with the clients, tasks, files, and practice data your firm manages there. Double remains your system of record: Filed reads from it when you ask, and only changes it when the connection allows writes.

Double connects with an API key — a **Client ID** and **Client Secret** that a Double super admin generates once for the whole practice.

## Before you start

* A Double **super admin**. Only super admins can generate the API key; admins and regular users cannot.
* Somewhere safe to paste the credentials straight away. Double shows them once.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**The API key belongs to the practice, not to a person.** Whoever enters it in Filed gives that Filed workspace the key's access to Double. Share it only with the person setting up the connection, and never by email or chat.
{% endhint %}

## Generate the API key in Double

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Open practice settings

Sign in to [Double](https://app.doublehq.com) as a super admin and go to **Practice Settings > Practice Management > General** ([quick link](https://app.doublehq.com/settings/practice)).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Generate the key

Click **Generate API key**. Double opens a pop-up with the **Client ID** and **Client Secret**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Copy both values immediately

Copy the Client ID and Client Secret before closing the pop-up. Once it is closed, Double no longer shows them.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

If you cannot see **Generate API key**, you are not a super admin. Ask your practice's super admin to generate the key and pass it to you securely.

If the key was generated earlier and the values were lost, email Double Support at <help@doublehq.com> and mention that the key has already been generated. Double sends the existing values back through a secure link.

## Connect Double in Filed

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Start the connection

Go to **Plugins**, open **Double** under practice management, and click **Connect**. Name the connection, and clear **Write** if Filed should only read from Double for now.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Enter the credentials

Paste the **Double client ID** and **Double client secret** into the matching fields, then click **Connect Double**.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Wait for verification

Filed exchanges the credentials for an access token and reads your practice's branches to confirm the key works. The connection becomes **Active** once that succeeds.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Filed stores the Client ID and Client Secret encrypted and renews the access token itself. You are not asked for the credentials again unless they change.

## What Filed can do with Double

Ask **Analyst** about a connected practice. It works directly with Double's API, so it can:

* Look up clients, their details, contacts, and properties
* List tasks and non-closing tasks, their comments, and who they are assigned to
* Browse a client's files and folders
* Read Metrics tabs, visuals, and variables
* Review users, branches, organizers, posts, timers, and the activity log

With **Write** enabled, Analyst can also create, update, and delete these records when you ask it to — for example, create a custom Metrics tab or reassign a task. Analyst runs each write once. If Double rejects a change, it reports Double's reason instead of retrying.

Double does not appear in **Client Import**. Bring Double data into your work through Analyst.

## Example prompts

* "List my Double clients"
* "Show the open tasks for this Double client"
* "List the files for this Double client"
* "Create a custom Metrics tab called Q3 review for this client in Double"

## Troubleshooting

### Filed says the credentials are invalid

Paste the Client ID and Client Secret again exactly as Double showed them, with no spaces before or after. If the pop-up is already closed, request the existing values from Double Support rather than generating a new key.

### The connection stopped working

Open the Double connection in Filed and choose **Reconnect**, then enter the current Client ID and Client Secret.

### Analyst says Double rejected a change

Double enforces its own rules — for example, Metrics tab names are limited to 34 characters. Analyst passes Double's reason back to you; adjust the request and ask again.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.filed.com/reference/plugins/integrations/practice-management/double.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
