# Canopy

Connect Canopy to import the clients and documents your team uses for tax preparation. Canopy remains your system of record, while Filed reads the clients and files it needs for the work you ask it to do.

Canopy connects through Prowork for Chrome rather than through API credentials. You sign in to Canopy yourself, in Canopy's own sign-in page, and Filed works through that session.

## Before you start

* [Prowork for Chrome](/reference/plugins/prowork/browser.md) installed and paired in the browser you use for Canopy
* A Canopy account with access to the clients and documents you want Filed to see

Filed sees exactly what your Canopy account sees. If you cannot open a client in Canopy, Filed cannot either.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Connect Canopy in the same browser the extension is paired in.** The connection uses that browser's Canopy session, so a session in a different browser or Chrome profile will not be found.
{% endhint %}

## Connect Canopy

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Start the connection in Filed

Go to **Plugins**, open **Canopy (Prowork)**, and click to connect. Give the connection a name your team will recognise.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Sign in to Canopy

Filed opens Canopy in a small sign-in window. Sign in there as you normally would, including any verification step your firm uses.

If you are already signed in to Canopy in that browser, this window does not appear and the connection completes on its own.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Wait for it to finish

Filed confirms the connection itself once you are signed in. There is nothing further to click.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

Your password and verification codes go straight to Canopy. Filed never receives them.

## What Filed can do with Canopy

Once connected, Filed can:

* Bring your Canopy clients into the workspace
* List a client's documents, tax documents, and organizers
* Import the files you select onto that client in Filed

Importing copies a file into Filed. Nothing in Canopy is changed, moved, or deleted.

## Choosing documents for a client

Open a client in Filed, choose to add documents, and pick Canopy as the source. Filed shows that client's Canopy files, and the ones you select are copied across.

## When your Canopy session expires

Canopy signs people out periodically. When that happens mid-task, Filed reopens the Canopy sign-in window so you can sign in again, then carries on. If the window appears while you are working, that is why.

Because the connection depends on a browser, it also needs that browser to be running. If you start a connection while it is closed, Filed names the browser it is waiting on and stops there rather than creating a connection that cannot work — open that Chrome window and try again. It should read **Online** on the Prowork for Chrome page within a minute of opening.

If Filed instead asks you to finish pairing, that browser has a login code that was generated but never pasted into the extension. Follow [Prowork for Chrome](/reference/plugins/prowork/browser.md) to finish it.

## Reconnecting or removing

To point Filed at a different Canopy account, connect Canopy again and name the new connection clearly — clients already imported stay attached to the connection that brought them in.

Removing the connection stops Filed reading from Canopy. Documents already imported remain in Filed.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.filed.com/reference/plugins/integrations/practice-management/canopy.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
